March, 2005 ~ Oh, What Is Unity?
At one time or another, nearly everyone who is a part of the Unity movement finds him/herself faced with the question, “What is Unity?” When I was new to this, I found myself trying to give too much information… confusing me and the listener! Twenty or so years ago, one of our leaders created what she hoped would be a quick and easy summary of what Unity is. We have come to know her summary as the Five Fundamental Principles of Unity. These have been tweaked, reworded and interpreted along the way, but, by and large, they have served us well. However, I recently found myself playing with another set of descriptors; related not so much to what we believe, but to what we do… to Unity as a spiritual practice. See what you think.
Unity as a Spiritual Practice
We worship God
We follow Jesus
We study the Bible
We seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit
We practice affirmative prayer and meditation
We behold the Christ (Divinity) in every person
We behold the Divinity in all creation
We take personal responsibility for our use of The Law of
Mind in Action
We honor every person’s right to choose a spiritual pathway
We give of our selves and our substance to the cause of
Peace and Prosperity for all
“The keyword for our time is practice. We have all the light we need, we just need to put it into practice.” Peace Pilgrim
